Today marks a bit of a milestone for California renewable energy enthusiasts: we’ve hit the big 1 Gig mark!

California has long been one of the biggest solar leaders in the US and today’s achievement is a testament to the fact that even during these economically slow times, the green market is hot. So hot, in fact, that solar has grown by 40% in California just over the past year alone. We boast 20% of all solar companies in the US, employing over 25,000 people.

So, what’s next? Well, we’re still working towards the Million Solar Roofs goal. The forecast (Fig. ES-1) predicts 3-ish GW by 2016, if we continue at the same pace. Governor Jerry Brown is hoping for even more growth – a whopping 12 GW installed by 2012.
