The History of SunPower

SunPower Has Grown Continually Since Day 1

Ever since the 1970s SunPower has designed, developed, and manufactured innovative high-efficiency solar technology. To name a few, they’ve produced crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, roof tiles, and solar panels.

Their market includes and is not limited to homes, businesses, commercial buildings and utilities.

The Solar Company is a proud SunPower Elite Dealer.

SunPower was established due to the oil crisis. In order to solve the problems involved with a depleting resource, co-founder, Richard Swanson, a Stanford engineering student, formulated creative ideas involving alternative energy.

In those early times, solar cells had already been used by NASA to power space machines such as the satellite; thus, his main concern was price. A great product existed in basic form, but how could he make solar cells more affordable in order to be utilized on a larger scale?

Through innovation, creativity, and a grand mission, Dr. Swanson was awarded numerous grants and funding to power his ideas into a more tangible reality that spearheaded solar power in an amazing direction. Eventually SunPower became a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ as SPWR.

In 1993, one of the first major companies to select SunPower was Honda. Honda entered a solar car race across Australia and sought out the company they felt would help them win. SunPower was dawned the privilege and through hard work and effective technology they were able to craft a high-efficiency solar-powered car that ended up winning the race by an entire day.

Yep, you read that right – an ENTIRE day. That’s what you call an extraordinary feat, but that’s not where it ends.

The news of SunPower’s technology and accomplishment spread and soon after, NASA also approached SunPower to power the world’s first solar-powered aircraft, the High-Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) UAV Project. This aircraft broke the highest altitude record and soared 96,863 feet.

By January 10, 2007, SunPower acquired PowerLight, a company that specializes in solar panel installation on rooftops as well as solar panel ground mounts. PowerLight also introduced their own solar trackers that enabled the panels to track the sun throughout the day; thus, allowing for higher effectiveness in harnessing the sun’s energy.

The vision of both companies aligned to provide financial and environmental benefits worldwide thereby making the unity between the two companies more valuable than ever not only on the companies end, but also the people they serve.

By 2008, an agreement was made between SunPower and PG&E to build the largest PV powerplant.

With continual innovation and goals to be met, SunPower remains a global industry leader providing benefits and services to numerous markets including government agencies, utilities, technology leaders, and residential and commercial owners.

SunPower will never cease to think, brainstorm, craft, build and make ideas become a reality – a reality that is efficient, effective, and fruitful.

So, is there any question as to why The Solar Company is a SunPower Elite dealer? Nope. The choice is simple, easy, and smart – to never settle for less than the best.
